Mothers Day in the Forest of Dean Lodges

Celebrate Mothers Day in Forest of Dean lodges

Mothers Day UK falls on Sunday March 31st

We all celebrate the day but do we know anything about it? Mothers Day and its traditions stretch back to 1908. A simple of Google will give you the details, should you be interested to know the history of Mother’s Day. I “borrowed” this, just in case.

Mother’s Day is a celebration honoring the mother of the family. As well as motherhood, maternal bonds, and the influence of mothers in society. It is celebrated on various days in many parts of the world. The most commonly in the months of March or May.

I took a look at the main Wikipedia article on Mothers Day and I was amazed at how little I knew about it. I thought this was some long held pagan holiday but, as usual, I was wrong.

We have a lady called Anna Jarvis to thank for Mother’s Day, she held a memorial to her mother in St Andrew’s Methodist Church in Grafton, West Virginia. This is the very same place you will find the International Mother’s Day Shrine.

That’s the history lesson over with. But it is nice to know these facts. After all; one never knows when one will be asked a Mother’s Day related question in a pub quiz, does one?

Mothers Day Celebrations Forest of Dean 2019

Now, the lovely people at Forest of Dean Lodges, which are in Coleford, Gloucestershire, they have asked me to tell all who will listen that Mother’s Day in the Forest of Dean is a superb way to treat mum.

Not only is it a beautiful place for a holiday but the Forest of Dean Lodges also have mini-breaks, health and fitness breaks. There are couples breaks and a range of other long term and short term breaks and stays.

While your staying in one of these Forest of Dean lodges or cottages, you can also pop down to the Designed for Beauty Salon and treat your mother to a makeover or some other great beauty treatments they have available.

Imagine your mum’s face when you she pulls up to a Forest Retreat that also offers Spa and Beauty treatments?

There is a special Mother’s Day package that cost a miserable £37.50 consisting of a Hot Tub, Hydrating Hands and Fabulous Feet.

That beats the hell out of a bunch of flowers and costs about the same.

Treat your mum like a queen this Mother’s Day, take her to the Royal Forest of Dean.

Dog Friendly Cottages Forest of Dean Lodges

Dog Friendly Cottages in the Forest of Dean – Your dog is as welcome as you are to Forest of Dean Lodges.

Could you leave your pet behind and go on holiday? No, of course not.

Dog friendly cottages in the Forest of Dean ensure that you and your best friend have a great holiday together. We’ve all been in that situation. You want to go on holiday but there are several good reasons not to. Your dog and his welfare sometimes prevent you from having the holiday you want.

The biggest problem is not the cost of boarding kennels, although it is a factor. If, like me, you had a dog who had separation anxiety, you would understand. My dog would howl like wolf, sometimes for days, if he was separated from us.

Dog Friendly Cottages – One good reason to take them with you.

Their dogs might urinate, defecate, bark, howl, chew, dig or try to escape. Usually, right after a guardian leaves a dog with separation anxiety, the dog will begin barking and displaying other distress behaviors within a short time after being left alone-often within minutes. see more.

This was my dog all over. Its as distressing for the owner as it is for the pet.

This is one of the reasons why we at Forest of Dean Lodges in Coleford allow you to bring your pets on holiday with you.

Having your dog on holiday with you is priceless. It also cuts out any worries you might have about leaving them behind. Your dog is as welcome on our Forest cottages and lodges as you are.

As I mentioned above; there is also the cost of boarding kennels. These days, even a minute Chihuahua will cost you a fortune to be put up in a boarding kennels. Some kennels are cheaper than others but 36 pounds per day is about average for a good boarding kennels. That is for one dog!

So, forget the separation from your best friend, forget the sky high boarding fees. Bring your dog with you to our Forest of Dean cottages and we will spoil him as much as we spoil you.

The other great bonus? He has the whole of the Forest of Dean as his playground. You will both have a great holiday. If you need any more information, please contact us.

SCHOOL HOLIDAY DATES 2018

School holiday dates are very important dates to know. Just ask any school kid.

Wales School Holiday dates are very important dates. Who says so? well, the school kids for a start.

There has been arguments over many years about taking children out of school for holidays during the term. This can lead to prosecution, in some cases. There have even been long, drawn out, court cases where parents have challenged the policy of taking their children out of school during official school terms.

Parents who are going abroad for their holidays face hikes in prices for foreign travel. Sometimes the prices are hiked so high, people can’t afford a trip abroad during the summer holiday breaks. This leads to some decisions that are conflicting with the law.

So, it is important to plan ahead. Check out the school holiday breaks for Wales and then check out our Royal Forest of Dean Lodges for those periods. Plan ahead and book ahead, that way you won’t be disappointed.

There are many links from where you can get information on school holidays 2018. here, for example, is another great website that parents will find helpful when planning their Forest holidays.

If you live in Scotland and Northern Ireland, you will need to check with your local council for holiday terms. There is a government website for England and Wales that has a post code search for school holiday terms. Follow this link.

Private Cottages Forest of Dean – Cottage or Lodge?

Latimer Lodge in the beautiful Royal Forest of Dean.

Private cottages forest of dean or private lodge forest of dean; what is the difference? I’ve been asked this question a number of times and my answer is always the same. The difference is akin to hair and fur.

If you trawl the Internet for the answer, you just get confused. Take this article for instance;

As nouns the difference between cottage and lodge is that cottage is a small house; a cot; a hut while lodge is a building for recreational use such as a hunting lodge or a summer cabin. As verbs the difference between cottage and lodge is that cottage is to stay at a seasonal home, to go cottaging while lodge is to be firmly fixed in a specified position.

I hope that clears that little argument up. Lodge, Cottage, Cabin, people have their own names for these type of buildings. At the Forest of Dean in Coleford, we call our buildings lodges but what is important is that you are sleeping in top class accommodation, whatever you care to call it.

Latimer Lodge Forest of Dean

One such lodge is Latimer Lodge. For a couple or a couple with a child, this is the perfect holiday lodge.

Forest of Dean St Valentines Day – Why not Treat Somebody Special

St. Valentines Day 2019 in the Forest of Dean is something special. When is St. Valentine’s day? February 14th is the day in question.

Every year, people all over the world celebrate St Valentine’s day in all manner of weird and wonderful ways. Some people send flowers, others send chocolates, some send both. There are thousands of ways to celebrate this lovely day and we at Forest of Dean Lodges in Coleford would like to lend a helping hand.

Did you know; Second only to Christmas, St. Valentines Day sells most cards? Over 160 million cards worldwide. Just imagine that?

The History of St. Valentines Day

As with many other traditions, St. Valentine is as much a half myth, half-truth concoction. The Catholic Church has at least three St. Valentines or variations on the name.

One story goes that the emperor Claudius II, a third-century ruler of the Roman empire outlawed marriages. He though single men made better fighters. Wives and families were therefore not the order of the day for young warriors.

The legend has it that a priest called Valentine thought this unjust and continued to perform marriages. Claudius didn’t like this one bit and so had him bumped off.

More about St. Valentine

Another legend has St. Valentine as a person who helped prisoners escape from jails where they were tortured and beaten. He was of course caught and banged up himself. According to the legend, Valentine sent the first message himself. This was, allegedly to the jailer’s daughter. It was signed “from your Valentine”. This is the message that is used to this very day.

There are more stories of this kind. One reason for the event being held in the middle of February is, so I am told, down to the Catholic church. According to whoever, the church wanted to persuade pagans from their wicked ways. So, putting St. Valentine’s day smack bang in the middle of a pagan festival seemed to be a great idea.

While some believe that Valentine’s Day is celebrated in the middle of February to commemorate the anniversary of Valentine’s death or burial–which probably occurred around A.D. 270–others claim that the Christian church may have decided to place St. Valentine’s feast day in the middle of February in an effort to “Christianize” the pagan celebration of Lupercalia. Celebrated at the ides of February, or February 15, Lupercalia was a fertility festival dedicated to Faunus, the Roman god of agriculture, as well as to the Roman founders Romulus and Remus. Read more on this topic.

St Valentine’s Day in modern culture

Mind you; St Valentines Day has not always been linked to peace, love and understanding. Oh no! During the time of a certain Al Capone, Circa 1929, there was a memorable “rub out” performed in Chicago. 5 members of Bugs Moran’s North Side gang and two associates were gunned down by other gangsters posing as policemen.

Nobody was ever caught and the “St. Valentines Day Massacre” has since become as synonymous with the 14th of February and the love machine from the time of Claudius II.
